Many beginning beekeepers are siting their hives for spring. I always suggest that your landing boards should face south, or southeast for the best activity and landing board clearing.
In this video, you'll see the dramatic difference that having landing boards facing south offers.
Snow melts off faster, bees fly sooner, and foragers head out earlier in the day.

I use the Flir C2 for my thermal shots. Unfortunately, that camera is no longer being made or sold.

My optimum configuration here in the northeastern U.S.

1) All hives 17-18" off of the ground. (avoids skunk harassment and fewer bees dying during cleansing flights).

2) Single deep brood box with medium honey super.

3) Insulated inner cover with a feeder shim on top so you can offer fondant, syrup, or other feed choices that are appropriate for the time of year.
