Alleyway Ending
Ending #81
Alleyway (アレイウェイ)
Developer: Nintendo / Intelligent Systems
Publisher: Nintendo
Gameboy
1989
This is not a great game. Nor is it particularly fun. When looking at the list of brick breaking paddle thing games, or single player Pong, two titles really stand out from the crowd - Breakout, being the seminal work by Nolan Bushnell and Steve Wozniak that created the style of game and Arkanoid, which is the best known version. Alleyway is a poor man's lice's intestinal bacteria's version of the game.
The game droned on, level after level in boring, beeping maladroitness. Every so often you were awoken by the hurried music of the 'bonus" stage, which is pictured above. 60-95 seconds of ear-piercing twinging sounds that was passed off as music. Then, back to the near soundless ball smacking.
During your 24 level journey, if you ran out of paddle lives, you started from the beginning. I can see this being the death of several Gameboys as they are thrown across the room or out car windows when some poor person loses all their lives on stage 23.
To top it all off, once you beat that last bonus stage, your reward is Mario's shit-eating grin taunting you, mocking you for playing this when you could have been playing one of his real games, like the other Gameboy release title, Super Mario World. It's just a bitter reminder that Nintendo are Mario whores.
Then the game resets, and you are left to start again and contemplate suicide.
