You tell your friend their presentation was terrible and they should have tried harder. That's blunt.

Same truth. Same intention. But one lands like help. The other lands like a punch.

Most people don't know the difference. They think being honest means saying exactly what's in their head — no filter, no softening, no thought about how it hits the other person. And when someone gets hurt, they shrug and say — "I'm just being honest."

No. You're being blunt. And those are two very different things.
Honesty is about sincerity. You care about the truth AND the person hearing it. You choose your words because you want them to understand, not because you want to feel right.

Bluntness is truth without thought. You say what you mean but you don't think about how you say it. The truth comes out — but it comes out sharp. Careless. Sometimes cruel. Not because you meant to hurt. But because you didn't bother to be careful.

And here's what most "brutally honest" people don't realize — the brutality is not a feature. It's a flaw. If your honesty consistently hurts people, the problem isn't their sensitivity. It's your delivery.

The goal of clear communication is never to wound. It's to be understood. And being understood requires thinking about the other person — not just the truth.
