Stop Flying Blind in Production 📊 (Cosmos DB Monitoring, Done Right)

Most production outages are not from bugs. They are from teams who could not see the bug until customers screamed. Here is how senior engineers actually monitor Cosmos DB.

You cannot fix what you cannot measure. Cosmos DB throws off dozens of metrics: RUs consumed, latency at p99, throttled requests, partition heat, indexing lag. Knowing which ones to watch, and which alerts to set, is the difference between a 30-second incident and a 2-hour outage.

What you will learn:
- The 7 Cosmos DB metrics that actually matter (and the ones that do not)
- Latency: p50, p95, p99, and why p99 is the one to care about
- RU consumption tracking and budget alerts
- 429 throttle rate as the early warning of a hot partition
- Cross-region replication lag, and what healthy looks like
- Azure Monitor and Application Insights for Cosmos DB
- Setting up alerts that wake you up at the right time
- Diagnostic logs and how to find the slow query that is killing you
- The dashboard every Cosmos DB team should have

Perfect for:
- SREs running Cosmos DB in production
- Backend engineers debugging mysterious slowness
- Architects setting up observability
- Anyone who has asked, why is the database slow right now

The TL;DR:
Track p99 latency, RU consumption, 429 rate, replication lag, and indexing progress. Alert on p99 latency exceeding your SLO, sustained 429s, and replication lag over 1 minute. Log every query that exceeds 100 RUs. Do not trust averages, always look at percentiles.
