The Secret of the Vilyuy Reservoir | Documentary

Western Yakutia, 1960s. The history of the Mirny District is inseparable from the exploitation of the diamond deposits. Since diamond mining required a large amount of electricity, the Vilyuysk hydroelectric power station was constructed.

Every major project comes with its victims. In this case, the village of Tuoy-Khaya with a population of 500 people was submerged under the Vilyuy reservoir.

The construction of the hydroelectric power station was carried out under extremely difficult conditions: a completely uninhabitable area with absolutely no housing, roads or production facilities, but with harsh climate and permafrost. There are several Soviet documentaries addressing this topic, heroizing the “builders of a bright future.”
But they don’t talk about the inconveniences and suffering endured by the settlers. The makers of this new Yakut documentary decided to fill this gap and tell the fate of the people that were left without their homeland.
