THE GLEANER MINUTE: Airbnb Tax Approved, NARRA Passed After Chaos, Crawford Files Claim

The House of Representatives have approved General Consumption Tax on Airbnb-style rentals, bringing short-term stays into the tax net ahead of a 2027 start date and wider tourism tax increases.

Tensions flared in Parliament as Angela Brown-Burke was suspended during a dispute over the parliamentary mace amid heated debate on the NARRA bill, which was later passed by the government after an extended sitting.

Opposition spokesman Damion Crawford has filed a constitutional claim against the state, citing failure to provide enough public school spaces and alleging a breach of children’s rights.

Two men, including a police officer, have died following a crash along the Seaforth main road in St Thomas. In Clarendon, police say a body believed to be missing officer Sylvester Reid has been found, with a suspect in custody.

In sports, Molynes United, Treasure Beach, and Harbour View remain in a tight relegation battle in the Jamaica Premier League.

Midday currency trading shows the Jamaican dollar at 158.14 to one US dollar, with mainly sunny conditions expected in the morning and scattered afternoon showers.
