SITANGKAI: Venice of the South

So glad and fortunate to visit the southernmost place in the Philippines and it's just less than an hour boat ride away from Malaysia. Dubbed as Venetian Municipality of the 🇵🇭 due to the use of boats as primary transportation, although footbridges connect one house to another. Grateful to the family of incumbent Mayor of Sitangkai and to the marines for accomodating us during this brief but memorable trip. Basketball is very much alive even in the farthest part of the archipelago.

The Philippines is the leading supplier of Eucheuma seaweeds, accounting for about 80% of total world supply. Seaweeds are one of the country's most successful fishery products, but it is essentially a small-grower industry, providing livelihood in poor coastal areas. The town of Sitangkai accounts for more than half of the country's seaweed production, with at least 3,000 metric tons of dried seaweed produced monthly. Seaweed farming in the town covers roughly 2,500 hectares, with 60,000 more hectares with a potential for cultivation.

6:25am: Departure going to Tawi-tawi Php150 terminal Fee
8:00am: Trike to Parola Ride RORO to Sitangkai
12:00nn: ETD Roro
4:00pm: ETA at Port of Sitangkai
5:00pm: Visit the floating Village of Sitangkai
12:00mn: Depart for Bongao (mainland Tawitawi)
