‘Why Does It Hurt So Bad’ by Whitney Houston was released on July 7, 1996 as the seventh and final single from the ‘Waiting to Exhale: Original Soundtrack Album’. The song, like the majority of the soundtrack, was written and produced by Babyface. Whitney performed the single at the 1996 MTV Movie Awards on June 8, 1996; where the film and soundtrack were up for 3 awards and won the award for ‘Best Song from A Movie’ for ‘Sittin Up In My Room’. The performance was directed and taped by Bruce Gowers and used as a promotional clip as there was no official music video. ‘Why Does It Hurt So Bad’ peaked at number 26 on the Billboard Hot 100, number 22 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart and number 6 on the Adult Contemporary chart.
