Russia’s Deputy Chair of the Security Council and former President, Dmitry Medvedev, stated that Europe is undergoing militarization similar to the period before World War II during a speech in Moscow on April 30, 2026.

Speaking at an event organized by the Znanie Society, Medvedev claimed that European countries are increasingly preparing for a potential conflict with Russia, while stressing that Russia has no aggressive plans toward Europe.

He described the current Russia–West confrontation as “existential” and linked it to broader geopolitical tensions. Medvedev also commented on Russia’s military recruitment, stating that hundreds of thousands have signed contracts to serve in the armed forces since 2025.

The remarks come amid ongoing global tensions and continued conflict related to the war in Ukraine, now in its fifth year.
