Friday Week 14: Joaquín Sorolla -Black and White to Color using Acryla Gouache (17/04/2020)
We're finishing this week off in style, talking about one the greatest plein air painters of all time, Joaquín Sorolla. I have seen very few painters in my lifetime, where my brain still to this day has no ability to comprehend how they were able to produce certain paintings. It probably speaks about the vast chasm that exists between extraordinary people like Sorolla and us ordinary folk. Where they see challenges, I unfortunately see impossibility. Even if, although there's no proof of him working from photographs, even if Sorolla did use references to execute some of his paintings, it is still an amazing feat. But the truth is that, even though it may pain us to believe so, he was there, at the beach, with a make shift tripod and sheets to diffuse the sun and block the wind, painting from life. Just seeing those pictures gives me shivers. The blind commitment that a genius like Sorolla had to have, to setup on the beach in the most unconventional of manners and try to paint the most absurdly complex paintings, takes courage and belief in amounts that are beyond my understanding. For today, I just wanted to reflect upon the level of dedication that such a masterful artist like himself had. I actually believe that what prompted him to want to paint these paintings couldn't just have been their challenging nature . He had to feel joy and love and marvel at he saw. He was after all painting what was closest, painting HIS hometown, HIS beaches. So even though there will always be a painful awareness of how far we are from the genius of an exceptional human being that comes once in a lifetime, their lesson is loud and clear. We can only paint what we know.
