Copter Logging the Moonlight

More than 80,000 acres of forest burned in the 2007 Moonlight Wildfire. Private timberland was logged and replanted right away, but it took some courtroom battles to get any work at all done on blackened public lands. This big timber sale almost didn't happen. Environmental groups stopped the work here once, but "we prevailed," said a Forest Service man. Helicopter logging began on the Cairn MP Fire Salvage in April. It put a lot of people to work in Northern California and Southern Oregon. The crews are working in the same area as the first-ever helicopter logging job in the US, and with the same companies, Colombia Helicopters and Erickson-Air Crane.
