Tooth Extractions: Holistic & Traditional Methods

Hopefully you never need to have a tooth removed. But if you do, you might be curious about the way to go about a surgical extraction, or how it can effect your body.

With regard to extractions, I want to explain some differences between the "holistic" methods as opposed to more traditional methods.

In dental school, the general thinking is just take out the tooth. Make sure all of the tooth is removed from the socket, and you remove the infection.

There is something around the tooth and the tooth socket called the periodontic ligament. The thinking in the holistic method is that if you leave this ligament behind, it has a possibility of leaving behind infection and create problems in the jaw once your skin is healed. Over time, this can potentially become a nasty internal infection called a cavitation.

So in general, at least according to the holistic method, it's best to just take out the periodontal ligament, and preserving the socket in a way that allows for the bone to be used again in the future (for implants, for example).

The process of getting your bone to grow back usually involves sterilized bone cells from cadavers or cows. The holistic thinking is that these can be seen by the body as a foreign material, not only with the potential for not healing well, but also with the potential for infection.

To preserve the socket, one technique is to use something called PRF. PRF is actually made from your own blood (drawn and prepared in labs). We use this material to to pack the socket.

I've found that since using this technique years ago, I've found it greatly reduces post-operative complications, I've never had a case of dry-socket, patients heal well, and the bone fills in much better.

Some people still need a bone graft, but that's a conversation for the surgeon, as there's multiple, ways to do this.

Another thing we use in this practice is ozone. After we remove a tooth and clean out the the periodontal ligament, we use ozone to collapse the fistula. Essentially it blasts the area with oxygen. It can also help encourage regrow the of the capillaries that were torn during the extraction. Finally, the bleeding stops once the ozone is used.

So that's the thinking. If you are going to be having an extraction, remember to talk about some of these issues with your dentist.
