The artworks in Samuel F. B. Morse’s 'Gallery of the Louvre'
In 1831-32, Samuel F. B. Morse lived in Paris, studying and copying artworks at the Musée du Louvre for his monumental painting, 'Gallery of the Louvre.'
'Gallery of the Louvre' reproduces artworks Morse considered to be important for the education of an American audience.
The setting for Morse’s painting is the Salon Carré in the Musée du Louvre. The museum’s Grande Gallerie is visible through a doorway. All of the artworks depicted are from the Louvre’s collection, but they have never been installed as Morse shows them in Gallery of the Louvre. The Louvre organizes its galleries by school, or nationality. So, the Italian, French, Spanish, Dutch, and Flemish paintings, as well as the two antique sculptures, have always been shown in separate spaces in the museum.
The Amon Carter is delighted to participate in a national tour organized by the Terra Foundation for American Art of Samuel F. B. Morse’s iconic painting 'Gallery of the Louvre' (1831–1833). The exhibition 'Samuel F. B. Morse's Gallery of the Louvre and the Art of Invention' presents Morse’s famous painting and painted preparatory sketch in combination with works on paper from the museum’s own collection that, like Morse’s painting, feature museum and gallery spaces as their subject matter.
