Old Town of Taiping-Malaysia 太平 (September 2017)

Old Town of Taiping-Malaysia. Situated in the northern part of Malaysia, Taiping is my all time favourite small town hugging the Maxwell Hill, as such the weather is often rainy and agreeable. Almost every afternoon the deluge will come offering respite to the inhabitants.

Previously known as Klian Pauh, the town’s history can be traced back to the early days of the tin industry when droves of Chinese settlers arrived to make their fortune. Taiping was established in 1874 after the end of the Larut War to mark peace between warring mining groups.

As one of the first tin mining towns in the country, Taiping has many firsts, such as the first railway line and Station, telegraph and Post Office, port, prison, zoo and lake garden. In fact, Taiping was the capital of the Federation of Malay States of Perak, Selangor, Negri Sembilan and Pahang, before Kuala Lumpur took the honour.

The lung of the town is the Lake Gardens that attracts many locals. A quaint small town with many heritage buildings and delicious food.

So far Taiping has managed to stay off the international tourist's radars. I hope it remain this way as the namesake suggests : Great Peace.
