McGinty Mountain - a fun hike with rumors, mines, and caves.

At 2,183 feet of elevation, McGinty Mountain on paper looks like many of San Diego's backcountry climbs. But, as one of San Diego's "100 Peaks", it is first a fun climb, and second an interesting area to explore. Prior to it being set aside for preservation, it was an active mining concern in the early twentieth century. This in turn has led to rumors that it was the fabled gold mine of an Anza-Borrego teller of tales, Pegleg Smith. While this connection is a historical stretch, the fact remains that the gold mine has never been found, and in theory, could be on this peak.
