Reuleaux Triangle – Mechanical Design#Engineering #Mechanical #HowItWorks #TechEducation #mechanics

A Reuleaux triangle is a geometric shape of constant width formed by three circular arcs, each centered at the vertex opposite to it. Despite not being a circle, it maintains a constant distance between parallel supporting lines, allowing it to rotate smoothly within a square while keeping continuous contact with all sides.

In mechanical design, the Reuleaux triangle is used to generate non-circular motion with uniform width. When mounted on a rotating shaft or used as a cam profile, it can produce unique kinematic behaviors, such as converting rotational motion into near-square or oscillating motion.

Reuleaux triangles are widely used in special drill bits (to create near-square holes), cam mechanisms, gear design concepts, and educational demonstrations to explain constant-width geometry and unconventional motion in engineering systems.
