Teshuva: Why Is the First Step So Hard?

Teshuva: Why Is the First Step So Hard?

The days between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are called the Aseret Y’mei Teshuva—the Ten Days of Turning. This Shabbat, known as Shabbat Shuvah, invites us to reflect on how we turn our actions and our lives toward who we want to be. As Rabbi Kushnick explains, the greatest challenge of teshuva isn’t staying on the path—it’s taking that very first step in a new direction. Once we begin, momentum builds and transformation becomes possible. This teaching reminds us that each choice we make matters, and that with courage to take the first step, the rest of the journey becomes much easier.
