The brown trout (salmo trutta) is a common and widely distributed member of the salmonidae family that gets its name from the yellow-orange-olive-brown sides, which are underneath dozens of black, brown, and red spots and iridescent cheeks. They are popular gamefish and can be found worldwide.

Brown trout in Ontario have the following characteristics:

Color
Brown back, white belly, and silvery or pale brown sides with dark spots. Inland brown trout are more colorful than Great Lakes brown trout.

Size

Can grow to be 8–24 inches long and weigh 1–9.5 pounds. The Ontario record is 34.4 pounds.

Other features

White mouth and gums, orange on the adipose fin, and a square tail. The leading anal fin ray extends the length of the fin

Habitat
Prefer cold, clear, and deeper areas of lakes, but also use shallow shorelines when the water is cold. They can be found in pools, ponds, and streams.

Diet

Eat aquatic insects, salamanders, frogs, worms, crustacean mollusks, other fish, and fish eggs
Spawning

Spawn in the fall on lake shoals, and eggs hatch in 4–5 weeks.
Angling
Can be caught using minnows, spinners, jigs, and spoons. The best time to fish for brown trout is early mornings during the summer, evening just before dark, and mid-day during late April and early May.

Brown trout can be confused with salmon or rainbow trout, but they have three main distinguishing characteristics: white mouth and gums, a square tail, and orange on the adipose fin
