Hyundai i800 CamperVan Converstion Project - A vehicle has been acquired.
http://campervansam.uk - A process of elimination ( mainly based on the cost and the age of suitable vehicles ) finally found me looking at the Hyundai i800 8 seater people carrier as a suitable project vehicle.
At the moment, these are about as cheap a vehicle, capable of fulfilling the purpose of a basic Camper Van. They have a good reputation in the commercial arena as being solid, reliable ( if a little basic ) and generally underrated. I have only found a few references to them forming the basis of a camper-van.
One of these was a full converstion into a Camper Van by WellHouse in co-operation with Hyundai. ( https://youtu.be/3Dv2guwUu5M ) ( https://youtu.be/nunWCXeM980 ) These were originally offered through the Hyundai dealership network. There don't appear to be that many of them around in the UK. I've seen one on a local forecourt and the videos I've seen of conversions other than the Wellhouse one seem quite simple compared to what I would like to achieve.
I'm not after "cheap and nasty." I, as I suspect others might, want something that is a step up from sleeping under canvas on the ground. I would also like to use it for other things. I can't justify having a vehicle that sits depreciating on the driveway a good part of the year waiting for the weather to be nice. I want to be able to carry people, goods, children's furniture, building materials or bikes now and then. It needs to earn its keep and is really a replacement for the large family estate car we have always previously owned. I have swapped my Volvo V50 for it though being a 2.5 litre diesel, the road tax is significantly more costly.
The basic vehicle cost less than a grand. Lets just say it was a risky purchase at the time. It was filthy inside and out, had a flat tyre, leaked oil, souded like a bag of nails when started and would only start on a booster pack as the alternator wasn't charging the battery.
A full service with a good mechanic and a weeks worth of effort and a number of bottles of "Elbow Grease" took care of most of those issues. We believe that it is on its second engine. So despite the high mileage ( 260,000 ) I was told it had only done 70K on the engine in it. Time and service cost will tell.
I'm in the process of getting access to a workshop. I am having to do what I can without one for now which limits progress to design, planning and attending to internal enabling tasks.
The seats have been removed and placed in storage. Curtains are being made and some cardboard mock-ups have been created to confirm the practicality of some of my ideas for the fit out.
