Let’s Type Hanger 14 from Ahoy! (1987) - Solving a Strange C64 Code Mystery
In this video, I type in Hanger 14, a Commodore 64 game published in the January 1987 issue of Ahoy!, take a closer look at how it works, and then put it to the test.
Hanger 14 is a Hunchback clone with a wonderfully ridiculous premise: a cargo rocket has been hijacked on the metal planet Metallion, and the Greater Andromeda Tea Biscuit Company sends in a robot to retrieve it. Perfectly normal 1987 video game stuff.
But while typing this one in, I stumbled across something unexpected: a line of code that looks completely wrong.
Not subtly wrong. Instantly, obviously wrong.
Except... it isn’t.
That strange little mystery turns into a fun deep dive into how Hanger 14 handles sprite collisions on the Commodore 64, including some clever VIC-II hardware behavior that makes the code look far stranger than it really is.
Along the way, we’ll break down the relevant code, follow the debugging process, and try to beat the game.
If you enjoy Commodore 64 programming, retro computing, classic type-in games, and taking a closer look at how these programs were built, this one’s for you.
Happy typing!
