Actors on Acting - Nov 2022
The actor has arrived. Today it is the actor, and not the writer nor the intellectual, who is being made a Cultural icon by people, in most Indian languages. In Kannada, for example, Rajkumar the late popular actor is placed next to Kuvempu, the iconic Kannada Writer as a peoples hero. Now, it is late Puneet Rajkumar, an even younger actor, who died very young, is being revered by the people.
Is actor a mere gossip?
As a society, we have still been clinging to the old order. We have not tried to understand why it’s people are able to relate to an actor much more than a writer or a thinker. Cultural criticism, for example, has still remained by and large literary criticism. Media, by and large, is still trivialising the actor through their gossip columns.
Where is Theatre, where an actor gets born?, Theatre is being badly neglected. Theatre training institutions, theatre repertories, amateur theatre, all are badly neglected. They have become dens of petty politicking. But let us face let we are responsible. We are responsible for our pathetic professional situation. We have been thinking of ourselves as carriers of false emotion, and not as actors with courage, conviction and character.
Young India!
Aspiring young people are coming in hordes into acting. They are coming, either from disadvantaged communities, or are dropping out of their comfort zone and arriving into social disadvantage. But, we are not training them.
At the most, we are giving them quick lessons in trade-craft and are pushing them towards entertainment ghetto. They are not made aware of themselves. Like fools, we still think that engineering matters more than culture.
India as ghetto!
Big cities have become young actors ghettos. Villages have become, economic, social, and cultural ghettos. Isn’t it a shame? Maybe the mass of people have a little more sense than us. Maybe, they are looking for a little sense and some emotion, rather than false dreams that are being doled out to them by us. Maybe, we have not recognised that the iconic actor is chosen more carefully than one chooses one’s politician. Maybe, they choose the actor for their strength of character.
Maybe acting, if it is done as it should be done, provides strength of character.
