Harry Somers: "Louis Riel" (Toronto, 1967)

Here is the complete opera in three acts based on the life of the Canadian politician and political leader of the Métis people, Louis Riel (1844-1885). Consisting of 18 scenes, the opera covers 16 years in the life of Manitoba school teacher and Métis hero Louis Riel, from the Red River Rebellion (1869–70) to the North-West Rebellion (1884–85), and his trial and hanging in Regina in 1885. It also dramatizes the political scheming in Ottawa that resulted from Riel’s actions, as well as several confrontations between Riel and his family, friends and foes. Victor Feldbrill is the conductor in this Canadian Opera Company production premiere. Bernard Turgeon sings the title role, with Joseph Rouleau (Bishop Taché), Glynne Howell (William McDougall), Cornelis Opthof (Sir John A. Macdonald), Ermanno Mauro (Baptiste Lépine), Patricia Rideout (Riel's mother), Mary Morrison (Riel's sister), and Roxolana Roslak (Riel's wife). The entire cast is listed in the closing credits (2:13:16).
