Highway of Heroes Remembrance Day 2018

On the 11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month, 1918, the Great War finally came to a close. The sounds of the endless gunshots, explosions, and screams of terror all finally ceased. It was a joyous day, but yet also a day of sorrow and mourning. The war had come to an end, but not before 17 million men and women lost their lives. It came to be known as the "War to End All Wars," and after the five years of treachery and horror, no man wanted another. Unfortunately, they were gravely mistaken. The subsequent Second World War took the lives of 80 million soldiers and 55 million civilians across numerous different nations. Many stepped forward, many never returned. May their service, and those who lost their lives, never be forgotten.

Although our fair Dominion was established in 1867, the First World War and all wars following it shaped Canada into the nation it is today, prosperous, strong, and free, but battle-scarred. Every year on this day, we remember the men and women who put their lives on the line in the defence of our freedom, those who continue to do so, and those who lost their lives in the process. This year, in particular, marks the 100 year anniversary of the Armistice.

Please, take a moment to reflect and be thankful today, for all the men and women who lost their lives in our 150 year long history. May they rest in peace, and may they never be forgotten.
