Maratha Samrajya Ka Patan — 3 Panne Ki Sandhi Jisne Bharat Ko Angrezon Ke Hawale Kar Diya! #shorts
In 1802, Peshwa Baji Rao II made a decision that would ultimately destroy the most powerful Indian empire of the 18th century. Facing military pressure from Yashwantrao Holkar, the Peshwa fled to the British and signed the Treaty of Bassein — agreeing to station a British subsidiary force in Maratha territory, surrendering control over foreign diplomacy, and effectively handing the East India Company a permanent foothold inside the Maratha Empire.
The irony was devastating. Shivaji Maharaj had built the Maratha Empire from nothing — carving out a kingdom against the mighty Mughal Empire through sheer military brilliance and guerrilla warfare. Baji Rao I had expanded it across the subcontinent, from Attock in the northwest to Cuttack in the east, winning 41 battles without a single defeat. Now, within a generation, their successor had quietly surrendered its sovereignty to a trading company.
The other Maratha chiefs — Scindia, Holkar, and Bhonsle — refused to accept the treaty. But they fought separately, never uniting against the common threat. The British used this division brilliantly. By 1818, after the Third Anglo-Maratha War, the last major Indian empire had fallen. The Peshwa surrendered and was exiled to Bithur.
With the Marathas gone, no power remained capable of resisting British expansion. The road to a complete British Raj was now open.
