The Philippine Navy has officially joined the elite circle of nations operating the powerful GÖKDENİZ Close-In Weapon System (CIWS)—becoming the third country in the world to deploy this rare Turkish defense system.

Previously used only by Turkey and Turkmenistan, this advanced naval defense weapon is now installed aboard the BRP Miguel Malvar, delivering powerful protection for Philippine warships operating in the West Philippine Sea (WPS).

💥 With twin 35mm autocannons, smart airburst ammunition, and fully autonomous tracking, the GÖKDENİZ is designed to intercept anti-ship missiles, drones, and low-flying aircraft—making it one of the most advanced CIWS platforms in the world.

This upgrade is part of Re-Horizon 3, a long-term Philippine Defense Modernization Plan that strengthens national defense capabilities in response to regional tensions, including threats in the South China Sea and lessons learned from global conflicts like in Ukraine, Israel, and between great powers such as the USA, China, and Russia.
