Transcarpathian 2021

The Transcarpathia is an administrative province located in southwestern Ukraine, coterminous with the historical region of Carpathian Ruthenia. Its administrative centre is the city of Uzhhorod. Other major cities within the oblast include Mukachevo, Berehove and Chop which is home to railroad transport infrastructure.
Situated in the Carpathian Mountains of western Ukraine, Transcarpathia (Ukrainian: Zakarpattia) is the only Ukrainian administrative division which borders upon four countries: Poland, Slovakia, Hungary and Romania.
While the name Transcarpathia is a translation of the Ukrainian version of the name, the Hungarian name translates as Subcarpathia.
Mukachevo, a beautiful big city city of the Zakarpattia region, is located on the Latorica River, 41 km south-east of Uzhhorod. The exact date of the founding of Mukachevo is unknown. In the 6th-9th centuries, there were several Slavic settlements here. The first written mention was made in the chronicle of Gesta Hungarorum (The Deeds of the Hungarians) created at the end of the 12th century. It referred to the migration of Hungarian nomadic tribes through the Carpathians in 896-900 and mentioned Mukachevo as a settlement under the name Muncas. It can be assumed that it appeared as a military fortification and settlement of the East Slavic tribe of White Croats in the 870-880s. By 900, the Hungarians settled on this territory. In 1086, after the devastating invasion of the Polovtsians led by Kutec Khan, the Hungarian King Ladislaus I completed construction of a fortress with stone walls on Castle Hill. In 1241, Mukachevo was devastated during the invasion of the Mongols led by Batu Khan. After the Mongols left the area, the Mukachevo Castle was significantly strengthened. In 1281, Ukrainian Prince Leo I of Galicia, who reigned in the Galicia lands, for some time extended his influence on the part of Transcarpathia that included Mukachevo. The settlement was part of the Galicia-Volyn principality. However, in 1321, the settlement was again annexed to Hungar. Munkács often changed ownership.
In 1352 another Mongol-Tatar army arrived under the castle of Munkács, but his garrison not only resisted his attack, but broke out from behind the walls, wrecking the enemy, captivating and executing Atlamos Khan.
Tódor Korjatovics, Ukrainian Prince of Podolsky, played a significant role in the history of Mukachevo, and he was associated with relatives in the royal court of Hungary. One of his sisters was King Sigismund's mother. In 1396, Sigismund donated the castle and the associated domination to him.
Here, the architectural heritage of Austria-Hungary, Ukraine and Czechoslovakia has been preserved.
Places of interest in Mukachevo:
Palanok Castle (Hungarian: Munkács vára, German: Plankenburg) - an outstanding historical and architectural monument of the 14th-18th centuries, a patrimonial nest of the Transylvanian princes Rakoczi, and the main attraction of Mukachevo. The castle, located in the south-western part of the city, was constructed on a hill in several stages. The Palanok Castle is delicately preserved, and is located on a former 68 metre high volcanic hill.
Between 1649 and 1656 György Rákóczi II welcomed in the castle, among others, the delegations of Bohdan Khmelnytsky of the Zaporozhian Cossacks. Rákóczi had very good friendly relations with the Ukrainian hetman Bohdan Khmelnytsky. Together they fought against common enemies.
For centuries owners of the castle defended the castle with his Hungarian, Ukrainian, Slovakian and German soldiers, they repulsed the attacks of the invaders from the northeast.
Since the 90s, a historical museum and an art gallery are housed in the castle. There is a coffee house, a wine tasting room, souvenir shops.
Princes Rakoczi Palace (White House) - a monument of palace architecture of the 17th-18th centuries built in a mixed Renaissance and Baroque style, the former family residence of the Transylvanian princes Rakoczi.
