3D Bioprinted Living Tissues Could Cure Diabetes | Breakthrough by Carnegie Mellon Scientists #tech

Scientists at Carnegie Mellon University have achieved a groundbreaking medical milestone — 3D bioprinting living pancreatic-like tissues made entirely of collagen, the body’s most abundant protein.

Using their advanced FRESH (Freeform Reversible Embedding of Suspended Hydrogels) 3D bioprinting technique, researchers successfully built fully biological microphysiologic systems that could one day help treat Type 1 diabetes by producing glucose-stimulated insulin release.

Unlike older synthetic models, this collagen-based structure behaves just like real human tissue, offering new hope for regenerative medicine. The team believes this innovation could pave the way for future organ bioprinting and personalized disease modeling.

This achievement was made possible by the collaborative work of the Feinberg Lab at Carnegie Mellon University and partners at the University of Pittsburgh, and is currently being commercialized by FluidForm Bio, a Carnegie Mellon spin-out company.
