Creating Pixel Art in Adobe Illustrator with the Rectangular Grid Tool

In the spirit of Rick Astley, "I'm never going to let you down!" 🎶 I'm back again to help you create some beautiful pixel art with Adobe Illustrator! Compared to using the Object Mosaic tool, this method uses the Rectangular Grid tool and is a little bit more involved, but that makes it more fun in my opinion!

• Just import a sketch of your art
• Select the rectangular grid (often under line segment). Adjust the horizontal and vertical dividers with equal numbers.
• Select the live paint bucket tool (often under shape builder). And select a fill color and start painting in along the grid.

FEW EXTRA TIPS:
The higher the number for the horizontal and vertical dividers for the Rectangular Grid tool, the more detail you can get and the lower the numbers, the less detailed.

If you want to be extra organized, I like to copy the grid and paste in multiple layers for each color to avoid overpainting. For example, keeping the outline color layer at the very top.
