Red-lored Amazon Baby
Amazons and most other parrots (except Cockatoos of course) are not cuddly. Humans are very tactile and we tend to want that in a pet, however parrots are not the ideal pet for this.
Flower, as we call her, is a typical Amazon in that she DOES NOT enjoy petting. She does enjoy scratches but only when she wants. I also don’t ask much of her if she’s not into it. But she needs to comply to stay out of things she’s not allowed to chew and places she’s not allowed to be - plus, must step up to go back to her cage when *I* want…Just basic parrot manners which need to be reinforced daily. Otherwise, we allow parrots to be individuals. We are careful in this respect to avoid being bitten…as a parrot, especially a baby like her, will only use a hard bite as a last resort. She’s VERY vocal about what upsets her, so it’s not hard to understand this girl. Note: I was filming alone and pine nuts were falling in between my fingers as I was using one hand - not a good idea if you don’t want to get pinched.
I don’t allow parrots to get into the habit of placing their beaks/mouths on fingers or hands. It only takes them to get in the habit of this and then they will progressively apply more pressure and more pressure until it becomes a bite. I circumvent that with some negative reinforcement by a gentle shake.
She’s super sweet and mega smart - and beautiful too. Just a little spicy Amazon Attitude. We want a home that understand all of this.
