Born and raised in the deep outskirts of Mexico City, the Gama brothers are keeping alive the rich legacy of marimba music with their latest project, Son Rompe Pera. While firmly rooted in the tradition of this historic instrument, their fresh take on a folk icon challenges its limits as never before, moving it into the garage/punk world of urban misfits and firmly planting it in the 21st century.

Written by the “Godfather of Ska” Laurel Aitkin, it’s the final track on his only Spanish language album during his 50+ year career. Born in Cuba but moving to Jamaica at an early age, Aitkin is an absolute icon in the Caribbean and ska world, being the first internationally known Jamaican artist credited with helping transform the island’s music into the powerhouse that it became. His fame exploded when he moved to London in the late 50’s, taking his sound to the immigrant and working communities of Brixton, where he occasionally used the Skatalites as his backing band. Although Spanish was his native tongue, his discography was completely in English until well into his 70s, when he finally realized his dream of making a Spanish-language album with the Madrid-based ska band The Skarlatines, using his birth name “Lorenzo” as the record’s title. While this album never rose to a commercial success, it’s always been regarded as a triumph for Latino and Spanish ska bands, a cult secret.

That first day that Son Rompe Pera was in Chile, they laid down the basics for what would be their version of “Mi Vida Sin Tu Amor”, with Miño doing the vocals, Macha at the recording desk, his band El Bloque Depresivo preforming the track, and Son Rompe Pera adding their distinctive marimba. A Mexican-Chilean version of a Cuban-Spanish underground ska classic, completely re-vamped and ready for a new generation. The song is usually chosen to end the set, whether it’s a concert of El Bloque Depresivo or Son Rompe Pera, as it’s guaranteed to get the audience whipped into a stomping frenzy.

The video was shot around various locations in Mexico City in October 2019 by Chris Vinan, showing a more intimate side of the group as they stroll through various street markets and get ready for shows in cramped backstages before giving their absolute all on-stage and collapsing after a chaotic punk finale. Its a candid view of everyday Mexican life over a ska backbeat, as this rising young band improvs their way to the top.

Nacidos y criados en los suburbios profundos de la Ciudad de México, los hermanos Gama mantienen vivo el rico legado musical de la marimba con su último proyecto, Son Rompe Pera. Si bien están firmemente arraigados en la tradición de este instrumento histórico, su visión fresca de un icono del folclore desafía los límites de la marimba como nunca antes, llevándola al mundo de garage/punk de unos inadaptados urbanos, y plantándolo firmemente en el siglo XXI.

Escrita por Laurel Aitkin, el “Padrino del Ska”, es la última pista del único álbum que éste cantó en español en una carrera de 50 años. Aitkin, que nació en Cuba pero se mudó a Jamaica a una temprana edad, es un icono absoluto en el mundo caribeño y del ska. Fue el primer artista jamaiquino en hacerse conocido a nivel internacional, y es reconocido por su papel en transformar la música de esa isla en una potencia mundial. Su fama explotó cuando se mudó a Londres a fines de los años 50, donde llevó su sonido a las comunidades de obreros e inmigrantes en Brixton, Londres, donde cada tanto recurría a The Skatalites como su banda de acompañamiento. Si bien el español era su lengua materna, cantó completamente en inglés en sus discos hasta tener más de 70 años, cuando finalmente cumplió su sueño de grabar un álbum en español con la banda de ska madrileña, The Skarlatines. Dio su nombre de nacimiento, “Lorenzo”, al título del disco. Aunque este disco nunca fue un éxito comercial, siempre se consideró un triunfo para las bandas de ska latinas y españolas, un secreto para entendidos.

En aquel primer día que Son Rompe Pero estuvo en Chile, la banda grabó las pistas básicas de lo que sería su versión de “Mi vida sin amor”, con Miño como cantante, Macha como productor, mientras su banda El Bloque Depresivo tocaba la canción, y Son Rompe Pera agregaba su marimba distintiva. Una versión mexicana-chilena de un clásico under cubano-español del ska, completamente reversionado y listo para una nueva generación.

El video fue grabado por Chris Vinan en varias locaciones de la Ciudad de México en octubre de 2019, y muestra un lado más íntimo del grupo a medida que pasean por varios mercados callejeros y se preparan para sus shows en camarines estrechos, antes de dejar todo en el escenario y colapsar después de un final de punk caótico. Es una mirada cándida de la vida cotidiana en México con un ritmo de ska, a medida que esta joven banda prometedora improvisa su camino hacia lo más alto.
