Trying To Learn The Shepherd's Leap (Salto del Pastor) | Quirky Customs

The salto del pastor – ‘shepherds’ leap’ – is a traditional mode of getting around on the Canary Islands. Goat herders living in the highlands used to – and still do – use it to cross otherwise impassable terrain, mountain slopes, or ravines. A wooden pole called a garrote, several meters in length, helps them vault over obstacles. The islands’ indigenous population created the technique, which was adopted by later locals. Euromaxx reporter Ruben Kalus visited the Spanish island of Tenerife to try his hand at it.
