Australian WW2 Machine Gun Carrier LP2A – Restoration, History, Drive

This video examines a relatively rare Australian-built machine gun carrier: a WW2-era Local Pattern 2A (LP2A) carrier, manufactured in Melbourne in 1941. Owner Darryl Lenanne provides details of the vehicle’s origin, the markings (AIF number T16532), and describes its restoration and use.

The LP2 carrier is often referred to as a Bren gun carrier but in fact this early model carried a .303 Vickers and later a Bren machine gun, reflecting the development of Australia’s Universal Carrier production.

The video shows that this particular unit was built at the Metropolitan Gas Workshops in Melbourne in 1941 and then shipped overseas in the same year to Egypt, and perhaps into fighting action. The Australian War Memorial record confirms carriers of this type were produced for overseas service.

The restoration story is a key highlight: this example was located in a sawmill in Victoria, Australia, used post-war for industrial work, with the armour plate largely removed and the hull reduced to a box. The restorer combined two hulls to rebuild one complete machine, refurbishing tracks, armour and drivetrain. We show the diagnostic, fabrication and historic-authentic restoration process in action. That post-war industrial reuse was common – many carriers were sold off, armour removed for visibility, and repurposed for civil uses such as timber hauling.
