Alexander's Ascension - Anabasis of Alexander the Great by Arrian, Preface & Book 1, Chapter 1

Without a doubt, Alexander the Great was and is one of the most written-about persons of history, despite living more than two millennia ago. Interestingly, at the time of making this video, exactly 2400 years have passed since his death.

The most prominent historical source about Alexander is Arrian's Anabasis of Alexander. It's author, Arrian (Lucius Flavius Arrianus), was a Greek living in the Roman Empire and held many political and military honors and positions.

This video series will attempt to cover the entire Anabasis of Alexander, from his ascension to his death. Filled with additional information about Alexander and his armies, Arrian, and other involved historical figures, it will not only aim to present why Alexander’s path was so impressive, but also provide more background to the events and additional context where the Anabasis can fall short.

This first video will cover Arrian's preface, where he describes his primary sources, as well as the first chapter, which describes Alexander's ascension and consolidation of power, and his first military victory as king - against the Thracians at Mount Haemus, 335 BC.
