China Hit 136 GW of Battery Storage — 40x Growth, Half the World's Capacity
By end of 2025, China's cumulative new-type energy storage reached 136 GW / 351 GWh — a 84% year-on-year increase representing 51.9% of global new-type storage capacity. In 2025 alone, China added 66.4 GW / 189.5 GWh — up 51.9% on power and 72.6% on energy — marking the fourth consecutive year as the world's largest market. Regional concentration is extreme: Inner Mongolia leads with 20 GW, Xinjiang with 19 GW, western provinces accounting for nearly 90% of new installations. The structural shift is equally significant: independent grid-scale storage now represents 51.2% of cumulative capacity, up 5 percentage points from 2024. Long-duration projects (4 hours and above) jumped to 27.6% of new builds. Average storage duration increased to 2.58 hours. The 2030 target is 370+ GW — nearly three times current capacity — as China transitions from mandatory co-location policies to independent market participants supported by capacity pricing mechanisms.
