Part of the strategy of the "new" Hall and Oates was to write the music first and then use nonsense lyrics to complete the songs, going back to finish the lyrics while they were in the studio. Spending more time on editing the songs, making them more compact and tight resulted in chart gold. The duo used their experiences with personal relationships to make statements on worldly current events when they recorded the Private Eyes LP. In 1979 they toured incessantly, and they were underwritten by Care Free Gum to play a series of high school concerts becoming one of the first artists to benefit from a corporate sponsorship. It was during this time that they refined their onstage performing style. The first single released from the eponymously titled LP, it hit #1 and stayed there for two weeks.
