Curriculum Shift: Towards Concept- Based Teaching & Learning

Traditional curriculum development has organized content, skills, and attributes within subjects, grade levels, and topics focused on what students should know and be able to do – essentially a 2-D model. These learning outcomes are an essential component of curriculum design, however the focus is shifting to an expectation that teachers and students, through critical thinking, inquiry, and problem-solving, will make connections to patterns, big ideas, generalizations, and concepts – a 3-D model where knowing and doing are the building blocks for deeper conceptual understandings that transfer across disciplines, situations, and time.

What will this mean for teaching and learning? How will teachers design instruction and assessment to engage student curiosity and develop deep understandings that connect facts, ideas, and generalizations?

In this 20-minute webinar you will learn to view curriculum through the lens of overarching concepts and explore what this means for instruction and learning. We will see that concept-based curriculum supports backward design, the development of 21st century skills such as critical and creative thinking and innovation, and authentic learning using real-world applications.
