Asha ~ Apassionata

I originally recorded this for an album of mine called “Wings of Fire”, produced with Phil Thornton, and released by New World Music, in 1990. Now, as an independent artist, I have placed it on a compilation album of instrumental pieces that I call “Stardance”.

As a small boy I loved the sound of the romantic electric lead guitar played by Hank Marvin of The Shadows… especially in a track called ‘Wonderful land’! I coaxed my friend and co-producer Phil into playing the memorable lead guitar solo on this track!

And as a teen I loved the sound of a plaintive oboe in Italian Baroque pieces, especially by Antonio Vivaldi and Tomasso Albinoni. There was one piece in particular that spoke to my heart, called Concerto for Oboe and Strings by Albinoni.

‘Apassionata’ contains both the plaintive oboe and the descriptive lead guitar… bittersweet in tone; alternating between joy and melancholy. It describes a state of spiritual longing that is represented by both a beautiful, natural, Mediterannean heartland, and by a slender, natural-child type of dark-haired female… somehow both the Holy Land and the mother of Jesus, in one inner feeling of communion and yet separation; merging and yet longing.

This was what my heart was like as a young man… the passion I felt for my inner home and heartland was almost overwhelming, and I felt myself to be in exile from the temple, as it were. All my impulses to create music came from this mysterious sense of longing.

But I have come to know that actually it was a true, authentic spiritual climate I lived in. My purpose on earth is to awaken to, and to honour and transmit from an initiated place, the etheric Christ in the spiritual heart… and to express this in music, the highest language of Love.

That original state of longing and separation is now being transmuted into truth, homecoming and ecstasy. Last night I dreamt I was in the temple with spiritual beings, and at supper was given pure white, bloodless flesh to eat. I realised I was integrating the body of Christ, which takes Him out of the abstract and conceptual for me, and into the living truth. In my dream I am being en-Christed.

We filmed for this piece in Turkey, on the Lycean coast near Fethiye, hostessed by artist friends Parisa Agahi and Isabelle Cordes. This took us to Kaya, Ovacik, Fethiye and Fatalya… to their houses, to nature and to the Aegean. On the way we met several cats, a white horse and a baby tortoise… in fact we rescued three tortoises as they trundled purposefully down the highway!

The overall effect of the music and the film, for me, is to conjure up that inner, mythical, spiritual heartland that I’ve always known… with its natural, innocent purity; colour; fragrance; sense of the sacred, and playful sensuality.

The ray of sunlight captured in the early footages did not appear to the naked eye as we filmed (as far as I could see on the tiny camcorder screen)… we only saw it there when we played it back! In the true, Knights Templar mythology of the Holy Grail, the ray of the sun which penetrates the chaste flower chalice, is known as the lance of the blood… Spirit fecundating Nature… Logos penetrating Sophia.

The Christ is born to humankind in the etheric realm by these same means… by the Sun God fecundating the Wisdom Queen. Human blood emanates from ether, and is the same plant power/life-force substance as the flower chalice. So the Christ is born to the human heart through the etheric blood… the Divine child is the product of the virgin birth in the human heart, just as when the cosmic sun ray fecundates the earth flower, which then produces seedling offspring. The miraculous Christ child is the seed of spiritual awakening in humanity.

In Kaya, where Isabelle lives, there is a great restaurant… a gorgeously quiet and peaceful garden place to hang out, eat well, play, meditate and compose!
