FINALLY Getting 3 Phase POWER! ~ Preparing to Install a Rotary Phase Converter ~ Part 1

Preparing for a GAME CHANGING Machine here at Salvage Workshop! It will transform my power into INDUSTRIAL Power! Even OPTIMUS PRIME would be proud!!

Check out Part 2 & then Part 3 and you can see why I did all this work & then watch as I start up a bunch of old 3 phase monster machines!
Part 2 - Installing a Rotary Phase Converter - https://youtu.be/qDknqdYLztw
Part 3 - Bringing 3 Phase Machines BACK to LIFE - https://youtu.be/zu0cNN6Ltj4

In this video, I'll take you along as I prepare a proper place for my new Rotary Phase Converter!

This will include:
- Moving a bunch of old machines
- Opening up the fence
- Transplanting a BUNCH of plants
- Rebuilding an old railroad tie retaining wall
- Properly routing the water from a gutter
- Pouring a concrete pad
- Extending the fence around the newly poured concrete pad
- Setting the MYSTERY Machine in it's new home!
- & More!

This is Part 1 of this project, and the next part will include more about the actual installation and setup of 3 Phase power here at the shop!

You may be asking yourself WHY is having 3 phase power a game changer, or even WHAT IS 3 phase power?

To answer WHAT is 3 phase power we have to start with Single Phase Power.

Here in the US, most homes only have what is called Single Phase power.

Single Phase power refers to a two wire Alternating Current (AC) power circuit. Typically there is one power wire and one neutral wire. In the US, 120V is the standard single phase voltage with one 120V power wire and one neutral wire.

Three Phase power refers to three wire Alternating Current (AC) power circuits. Typically there are three (Phase A, Phase B, Phase C) power wires (120 degrees out of phase with one another) and one neutral wire.

If you’re not electrically minded, think of single phase power (1 phase) as a lone paddler in a canoe. He can only move himself forward while his paddle moves through the water. When he lifts the paddle out of the water to prepare for the next stroke, the power supplied to the canoe is zero.

Now picture the same canoe with three paddlers. If their strokes are synchronized so each is separated by 1/3 of a stroke cycle, the canoe receives constant and consistent propulsion across the water. More power is supplied and the canoe moves across the water more smoothly and efficiently.

Now WHY would I want 3 phase here at Salvage Workshop?

Using 3 Phase power saves on electrical construction costs by reducing the current requirements, the required wire size, and the size of associated electrical devices. It also reduces energy costs because the lower current reduces the amount of electrical energy lost to resistance (converted to heat). Now that is slightly less true when converting single phase power to 3 phase power like in my doing, but still a factor.

In my situation, the main advantage of having 3 phase power is the ability to buy reasonably priced used equipment, ESPECIALLY old UNIQUE industrial machines and be able to hook them right up to power and put them to work (or start working on them...lol)!

3 phase power is something that many small shops would LOVE to have, and I'm pumped to be adding it to the shop here at Salvage Workshop!

I'd love to know your thoughts on this project!
