International Women's Day is celebrated on March 8th each year. This special day was created by Clara Zetkin in 1910.
On this day, women's accomplishments are celebrated. People reflect on progress, gender equality, and improving the position of girls and women in Australia and throughout the world.
Since the early 1900s, women have been commemorating International Women’s Day and advocating for gender equality. Since then, women's rights and equality in modern society have evolved. Feminist women fought valiantly to secure these rights.

In Sydney Australia, the first International Women's Day was celebrated in 1928. Then, the following year in 1929, in Brisbane. The first marches began in Sydney and Melbourne in 1931, and they are still going strong today.
In 1897, Catherine Helen Spence made history by being the first woman to run for office.
In 1901, the right to vote for women was established.
Since a law was passed in 1984, gender discrimination is prohibited everywhere.
In 2017, Australia was named the world's safest country for women by the research organization New World Wealth.
Both women and men honor the determination and bravery of all the women throughout history who have battled for women's rights and those who do so today.
