Views of London in 1883

Here I present an album of photographs of Victorian London, the great metropolis that was the world's largest city and the capital of the British Empire. 19th century London had become an unrivalled global political, financial and trading capital, although both Paris and New York were threatening this dominance.
As the British Empire expanded, the fortunes of the city grew with it, becoming also a magnet for immigrants from the colonies and the poorer parts of Europe. London was a city of extremes, immensely wealthy on one hand and a city of poverty on the other, with millions living in overcrowded unsanitary slums.
The photographs here, do not concentrate on the great buildings and thoroughfares of the great metropolis, but on the side streets, the tenements and courtyards that were a feature of the city.......
