Nissan’s Rogue compact crossover is the most popular vehicle the Japanese brand offers in the U.S. So when it came time to redesign this third-generation for 2021, you know Nissan was going to take it seriously.

They started with all-new sheet metal, giving the new Rogue a unique and bold look that also gives the crossover an upscale feel to it.

The wheelbase is unchanged from the previous generation Rogue but this new model is shorter overall, giving it better handling and easier parking in tight spaces.

Interior space is down a bit when compared to the earlier model but you wouldn’t know it to sit inside. As this video shows, our 6-foot-plus editor was able to comfortably sit in all five seats in the 2021 Rogue. And speaking of seats, yes, there are only five. The earlier Rogue did offer a third-row of seats but they weren’t very useful on a crossover this size, so Nissan axed them for this new generation.

The rest of the interior is comfortable and solidly built and the Rogue feels quiet and refined in everyday driving.

Cargo space out back does grow by about four cubic feet to 74 total cubic feet. That puts it ahead of rivals like the Toyota RAV4 and Ford Escape, and it’s just behind Honda’s CR-V. The seats fold flat with little drama and higher-end trims of the Rogue even have a nifty cargo divider panel.
Speaking of trims, there are four for this new generation Rogue: S, SV, SL, and Platinum. They span in price from just under $27,000 to just under $38,000.

We tested the SV in this video, and it would be the one we’d buy if it were our signature on the check. We’d then add to it the SV Premium Package, which includes goodies like leatherette seats that are heated up front, a heated steering wheel, a power liftgate, a moonroof, and second-row sunshades. All told, that model would be about $31,000 out the door for the front-wheel-drive version.

All third-generation Rogues currently come with the same powertrain. It’s a 2.5-liter, four-cylinder engine that makes 181 horsepower and 181 pound-feet of torque. A CVT automatic transmission is standard, as it is front-wheel-drive.

AWD (All-Wheel-Drive) can be added to any of the trims for an additional $1,400.

Despite having just a few more horsepower than the previous generation Rogue, this new model definitely offers better acceleration. The handling and steering is also improved, and the engine and transmission are well-paired and offer a relatively subtle driving experience.

Standard safety equipment on all 2021 Rogue models includes automatic emergency braking with warning and pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic alert, and rear automatic braking.

The SV and SL models then add Nissan’s ProPilot Assist system; this includes adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go-capability and lane-keep assist.

The top-level Rogue Platinum then adds a Navi-link system to the ProPilot setup. As the name indicates, this system uses the vehicle’s touchscreen navigation system to automatically detect the road ahead and look out for upcoming off-ramps, intersections, curves in the road, or changes to the speed limit. When it does, it will adjust the vehicle’s speed accordingly.

All told, the 2021 Rogue is a big improvement over its second-generation predecessor. But is it enough to beat its key rivals like the Ford Escape, Chevy Equinox, Honda CR-V, and the king of the segment, Toyota’s RAV4?
