Corpse Flower Time-Lapse

To get you into the Halloween spirit, we have a spooky little tale from the forests of South Sumatra…if you’re brave enough? Mwahahahaha...

Last week, our colleague Bondan Pergola came face to face with one of the world’s most gruesomely named flowers, Rafflesia arnoldii—commonly known as the “stinking corpse lily”. This iconic bloom, native to southeast Asia, is the largest known individual flower in the world. Its giant red petals emit a foul odor to attract insects—a stench infamously likened to decaying flesh! But this stinky prospect did not deter our intrepid colleague, who camped in the forest for eight days just to catch a rare glimpse of this plant in flower. Bondan seems braver than most as he reported back that “it doesn’t actually smell THAT bad.”

Bondan has also been busy recently working with local coffee farmers in the buffer zones around the nearby Bukit Barisan Selatan National Park—one of Sumatra’s most important biodiversity hotspots. Together with One Tree Planted, we’re helping more than 1,000 farmers to plant 100,000 trees in the area.
