This medicinal mushroom has been getting a lot of attention recently. So what is lion's mane good for? & what does lion's mane do?
Studies indicate it may improve mental performance, with purported benefits on cognition and memory. Some also suggest it can have mood, and immunity benefits.
To investigate if this is legit let’s see the clinical research on these effects, and look at the underlying molecules and their various mechanisms to get how it actually works. This will also help us figure out what kind of Lion’s Mane product will work best to supplement.
So, what is lion’s mane? And where does Lion’s Mane grow? Lion’s mane grows in forests of north america, europe and asia (called Yambushitake in Japan)
Its’ scientific name is Hericium erinaceus.
The mycelia and fruit body are each made up of unique molecules.
Alpha glucans (starches) provide the body energy, Beta-Glucans are more bioactive, implicated in many health effects.
Low weight Hericenones come from the fruiting bodies, while erinacines are found in the mycelium.
Studies and research into the benefits of Lion's Mane fall across three major health categories, the brain, mood, and immune system. I’ll also cover host defense signalling, which applies to many medicinal mushrooms
We’ll also look into where to buy lion's mane mushroom.
You can buy Lion’s mane supplements online and in store, Lion’s Mane powder is sometimes sold in bulk, but more often people buy the dry powder as lion’s mane pills or capsules. The best ones offer certified organic options, Nurolift (the one I use) also gets it DNA certified.
I avoid water and alcohol extracts because the added processing of these culinary mushrooms makes these products less similar to what’s used in the medical studies. It also makes it harder to measure dosage.
Some grow their own Lion’s Mane and cook it, with many recipes on Google and even Reddit.
In 2008 one of the first double blind clinical trials took place in Japan to answer with science one question… does lion's mane work?
Subjects aged from 50-80, the researchers wanted to test lion's mane in people with moderate cognitive impairment. Potential participants were all first given a cognitive function test. To be included in the study they needed to score between 22 to 25 out of 30.
Half of them then began taking a dosage of 4 250mg capsules of dried lion's mane fruit body powder daily. This powder was not a Lion’s Mane extract, the pills they supplemented were full spectrum fruit body. The control group got a placebo, capsules with just starch.
After 16 weeks, lions mane scores improved significantly, averaging 27 questions right. It was also safe for them, with no reported side effects.
To explain how Hericium erinaceus provides this memory and nerve support, researchers pointed to an ability to increase levels of key neurotrophic growth factors NGF (Nerve Growth Factor) and BDNF. Molecules made in the body that stimulate neurite outgrowth and regeneration of nerve and brain cells.
Studies have also suggested lion’s mane may carry antioxidant effects, meaning it may potentially help with inflammation and even affect gut health.
