🌿 Can India Save Its Biodiversity by 2030? | Big Reality Check | UPSC

From towering Himalayan glaciers to lush tropical forests, vast deserts, mangrove wetlands, and vibrant coral reefs, India is one of the world’s most ecologically diverse nations. In fact, it is recognized as a megadiverse country, hosting an extraordinary variety of species and ecosystems.

But the crucial question today is: Can India protect this biodiversity by 2030?

Recently, India submitted its 7th National Report to the Convention on Biological Diversity, assessing progress toward the global conservation goals set under the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. This framework outlines 23 global biodiversity targets, including restoring ecosystems, reducing pollution, controlling invasive species, and conserving 30% of land and marine areas by 2030.

The report presents a mixed picture. While progress has been made, only two of the 23 targets are currently on track, highlighting the scale of the challenge ahead.

There are certainly encouraging achievements. India’s forest and tree cover now spans around 827,357 square kilometers, which accounts for roughly 25% of the country’s geographical area. Between 2021 and 2023, forest cover increased by more than 1,400 square kilometers. Wildlife conservation efforts have also produced success stories, with the population of the Bengal Tiger rising significantly, while the Asiatic Lion and Indian Rhinoceros populations have also shown steady recovery.

However, serious environmental pressures remain. Nearly 30% of India’s land area is affected by degradation, impacting close to 97 million hectares. To address this, India has pledged to restore 26 million hectares of degraded land under the Bonn Challenge, with restoration efforts already underway across millions of hectares.

Another challenge lies in biodiversity monitoring. While data is widely available for flagship species like tigers, information about lesser-known organisms — including insects, amphibians, and many plant species — remains limited. This data gap makes conservation planning more complex.

Geographically, India’s biodiversity is distributed across remarkable ecosystems such as the Himalayas, the Western Ghats, the mangrove forests of the Sundarbans, the Thar Desert, and the coral ecosystems of Lakshadweep. Because of this immense ecological diversity, India’s progress in biodiversity protection will have a significant influence on global conservation outcomes.

The policy frameworks are largely in place, and planning has begun. The real challenge now lies in effective implementation on the ground.

So the big question remains: Will India achieve its biodiversity targets by 2030, or will increasing ecological pressure weaken these precious ecosystems? 🌿⚠️
