Taking Care of Our Abuelitos
The number of older adults (ages 65 and over) in the United States is expected to reach 94.7 million in 2060 with Latinos projected to make up 20% of the older population. Despite making up one of the largest ethnic demographics in their age range, elderly Latinos are disproportionately at a higher risk to experience mental health issues and not receive adequate or culturally competent care they need to live the rest of their lives with the mental health and dignity they deserve. In this session, panelists will discuss advancements in elder care as our nation prepares for a larger aging population, the impact this population will have on younger generations whose role as caregivers will increase, and how we can ensure Latino communities are receiving the best physical, emotional, and mental health care as they age.
