Chernobyl Is Not Safe Anymore…

The history and recent crisis of the Chernobyl New Safe Confinement (NSC), a massive steel arch engineered to isolate the radioactive ruins of Reactor 4 for a century. Initially completed in 2016 through international cooperation, the structure was designed to facilitate the decommissioning of the original 1986 sarcophagus while preventing further environmental contamination. However, the sources report that a Russian drone strike in February 2025 severely compromised the facility, piercing both the inner and outer cladding. While immediate radiation leaks were not detected, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) warned that the shield has lost its primary safety and confinement functions. In response, global donors have recently pledged millions of euros for an urgent three-phase restoration plan to stabilize the deteriorating structure. Maintenance efforts remain complicated by ongoing military attacks on the regional power grid and the extreme radiation levels still present within the site.
