"Raina Kabaivanska, a lyric soprano here coming to grips with a massive dramatic coloratura role, survived the ordeal triumphantly thanks to a masterly technique which, in spite of occasional doubtful intonation, allowed her to bring pathos to the more ambitious ornaments and to the very soft mezza voce passages. Renato Bruson made a magnificent Constantine with his noble phrasing and authoritative delivery when both vehement and afflicted. Giuseppe Giacomini brought to Crispo continually ardent and impassioned tone with great variety of color. The supporting singers were much appreciated: Giuseppina Dalle Molle (Irella), Luigi Boni (Maximian), Ambra Vespasiani (Licinia) and Tullio Pane (Albino). The chorus, led by Gianni Lazzari, was first-rate. Sandro Sequi's production was statuesque in manner, a little in the style of an oratorio, avoiding the risk of unnecessary bombast. With the aid of mobile panels, Giovanni Agostinucci's sets, based on neo-classical ivory and gold, aptly reproduced false-Roman decor as understood in the early 19th century, with gilded trees, symbolical chains, statues, altars and arches in the background. Less stylish were Giuseppe Crisolini's costumes with their long trains. There was frequent applause during the performance and all the indications of a triumphant success at curtain-fall."
