Joan Mitchell The Last Paintings at CHEIM & READ

Joan Mitchell has been a touchstone for generations of painters. These, her last works, show the transcendence achieved by the artist over the challenges of age, illness and the fashions of the art world. Having begun her career in New York in the late 1940s Mitchell was an integral part of the New York School, and a member of the historic Artists' Club. Moving to France in 1959 and eventually to Vétheuil (out side Paris) in 1967, the artist came under the influence of her environment, and the inspiration of artists like Monet, Cézanne and Van Gogh, while her paintings also became more emblematic of nature.
