Central Hidroeléctrica Más Grande de Europa: La Muela II [IGEO.TV]

El Príncipe de Asturias ha inaugurado este lunes el aprovechamiento hidroeléctrico Cortes-La Muela, ubicado en Cortes de Pallás y que constituye "la mayor central de bombeo de Europa", con una inversión global de más de 1.200 millones de euros, una potencia instalada de 2.000 megavatios (MW) y capacidad de generar unos 5.000 Gwh al año y atender cerca de 500.000 hogares, en un acto en el que ha estado acompañado por el presidente de Iberdrola, Ignacio Galán, y el de la Generalitat Valenciana, Alberto Fabra.

El complejo hidroeléctrico de Cortes-La Muela es "un ejemplo de instalación eficiente y sostenible económica y medioambientalmente", ya que "utiliza excedentes energéticos cuando sobran en el sistema y los aplica para producir energía cuando existe demanda punta".

La nueva planta hidráulica de Iberdrola, ubicada en la margen derecha del Júcar, permite almacenar energía potencial a través del llenado mediante el bombeo de agua de un embalse a un depósito superior, lo que posibilita comenzar a generar gran cantidad de electricidad en un tiempo de respuesta muy rápido al turbinar el agua de bajada al embalse y sin generar ningún tipo de emisión a la atmósfera.

En concreto, La Muela II consta de cuatro grupos reversibles que permiten sumar una potencia de turbinación de 852 megavatios --744 en bombeo-- que aprovechan el desnivel de más de 500 metros que existe entre el depósito superior y el embalse de Cortes de Pallás para generar energía.

Para su instalación, se ha excavado una caverna de 115 metros de largo, 50 de alto y 20 de ancho --de modo que podría albergar la Catedral de Valencia con el Miguelete o un edificio de unas 300 viviendas con una altura de 15 plantas--. Además, se ha construido una tubería forzada de 5,45 metros de diámetro y 850 de longitud, alojada en el interior de un pozo excavado en la roca con una inclinación de 45 grados, que permitirá que el agua del depósito llegue hasta el corazón de La Muela.

Durante los siete años que han durado las obras de ampliación de la central de La Muela, se han invertido 350 millones de euros y la compañía ha dado empleo a varios miles de personas. Además, más de 30 empresas vinculadas a la Comunitat han participado durante todo el proceso y se han realizado compras de equipos por valor de varios cientos de millones de euros.
