Birth and Rebirth: From Stellar Dust to Supermassive Blackholes | Tjonnie Li | TEDxCUHK

From time to time, we hear about great discoveries in Physics, but other than scientists and science students, very few of us actually understand them. In this speech, Dr. Tjonnie Li will be giving us an audio-visual tour of the birth and rebirth of black holes- from the creation of black holes through stellar explosions to the merger of two black holes forming a new, heavier black hole.

Dr. Tjonnie Li is an associate professor at the Department of Physics of the Chinese University of Hong Kong. His current research interest is extracting physics from gravitational waves, such as testing general relativity, inferring cosmological parameters, and measuring the neutron star equation of state using coalescing neutron stars and black holes. Dr. Tjonnie Li is the first scientist from Hong Kong to be a member of the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) scientific collaboration, which was involved in the Nobel Prize-winning detection of gravitational waves in 2017.
Dr. Tjonnie Li received his BA and MSci in Natural Sciences from the University of Cambridge (2009), and a PhD in Physics from the Dutch National Institute for Subatomic Physics (2013). Since 2015 he has been an Associate Professor in the Department of Physics of CUHK, and prior that he spent two years at the California Institute of Technology as a Rubicon Postdoctoral Fellow.

Tjonnie's research focus is gravitational-wave physics. He was involved in the Nobel Prize-winning detection of gravitational waves by the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory. His group is actively involved in the operation of current generation gravitational-wave detectors and studying the potential of future generation detectors.

Tjonnie's personal awards include the 2017 RGC Early Career Award and the 2018 Croucher Innovation Award. As part of the LIGO team for the discovery of gravitational waves he has been awarded the 2016 Gruber Prize in Cosmology and the 2016 Special Breakthrough Prize. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
